Warranty and servicing

Our garage door warranty, and the servicing that keeps it valid

We stand behind the doors, openers and work we supply, and the manufacturer cover is run through us, so you have one local number to ring. Here is what is covered, for how long, how to make a claim, and the service visits that keep the cover in place.

Where a product comes from Windsor Doors or another manufacturer, the product cover matches that supplier's warranty, and we lodge and manage the claim for you. Our own workmanship cover applies to the installation, repair and service work we carry out.

The servicing that keeps the cover valid

On a new door and opener we install, servicing by Garage Door Group on this schedule for 5 years from installation is a condition of the warranty. The first visit is where we re-tension and lubricate the springs after they settle in, and catch small issues early.

Your addressFirst serviceAfter thatRuns for
Coastal (within 500 metres of the ocean)Within 9 months of installationEvery 12 months5 years from installation
Inland or shelteredWithin 9 months of installationEvery 18 months5 years from installation

We note on your job sheet whether your site is coastal or inland. A missed visit can void the cover on a new door and opener, so book early and we will fit it inside the window.

What we check on a service

A visit takes about 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the door and how easy it is to get at.

  • Opening and closing, balance, tracking and alignment.
  • Springs, checked, tensioned and lubricated as required.
  • Hinges, roller wheels and bearing brackets, lubricated with approved products.
  • Cables, drums, tracks, brackets and fixings, inspected.
  • Locks, handles and safety devices, including PE beams where fitted.
  • The opener tested: limits, force, safety reverse and remotes.
  • Wear, corrosion, unusual noise or damage, flagged while it is still small.

Things that are normal, and not a defect

Oil-canning

Light ripples in the steel can show depending on the angle, the temperature and the light. Up to 1mm of distortion over any 150mm is within the accepted standard, measured by the Australian Garage Door Association's guide to visual inspection.

Operating noise

Doors, larger ones especially, can creak or make movement noise in normal use. Cleaning and lubricating the roller wheels and bearer plates on a service reduces it. Household lubricants can make it worse and speed up wear.

Roller door curtain deflection

When a roller door is closed, the curtain can sit slightly inward between the top of the side guides and the drum. It shows more on larger doors, and installing at the recommended height lets the lintel hide it.

Grime and salt

Corrosion or coating damage from built-up grime, chemicals or pollutants is not covered. Wash the outside of the door regularly, following COLORSTEEL®'s maintenance advice on a COLORSTEEL® door.

How to make a claim

  1. Step 1

Ring us as soon as you notice a problem, on 09 242 4278 or 021 906 966, and ask for Chris or the on-duty technician.

  2. Step 2

Have your invoice or job number ready. Transit or installation damage needs to be reported within 2 business days of delivery, collection or installation.

  3. Step 3

We inspect the door or the work, confirm whether it is covered, and arrange the repair or replacement. Claims that sit with Windsor Doors are managed through us, so you do not deal with the factory yourself.

What we will do

Where a claim is covered, we will, at our option (and for a manufacturer's product, at the supplier's option), repair the product, replace it with the same or an equivalent product, carry out or put right the service again, or refund the price of the product or service.

We do not reimburse costs such as removal, transport, repair or replacement by others unless we have agreed them in writing first. The warranty does not cover injury to people, damage to other property, or loss of income, profit or business, and we are not required to remove other goods or structures that stop a safe repair.

What the warranty does not cover

The warranty does not cover corrosion, denting, scratches, perforation, coating failure, or mechanical or structural failure caused by things outside our reasonable control, including:

  • Damage in transport, handling, storage or installation by others, or poor installation by others.
  • Third-party accessories.
  • Installation within 300 metres of the sea or water of similar salt concentration, or at unusually corrosive sites.
  • Industrial fallout, fumes, chemicals including cleaners, or sunscreen.
  • Contact with soil, ash, fertiliser, moisture-holding material, copper runoff, or wet or treated timber.
  • Grime, chemicals and pollutants that were not washed off.
  • Damage by people, vehicles or animals.
  • Subsidence, foundation movement, or deterioration of the building.
  • Storms, lightning, hail, earthquake, fire or flood.
  • Wind load above a wind-rated product's capacity, or bushfire conditions beyond its rating.

Also not covered

  • Doors installed anywhere other than a detached house or townhouse, unless we have agreed light commercial terms in writing.
  • Installation by anyone other than Garage Door Group.
  • Damage not reported within 2 business days of collection, delivery or our installation, or deterioration between delivery and installation.
  • Inherent defects in steel or other raw materials, and natural variation in the colour, look or grain of timber.
  • Ordinary wear and tear, weathering, salt spray, and fading or discolouration of coated surfaces.
  • Batteries, fuses and globes; electrical surges, brownouts, or liquid or moisture damage to electrical parts.
  • Remote range, and sensitivity or limit-switch adjustment on the opener.
  • Rust or corrosion reported after the warranty period.
  • Curtain deflection, acceptable oil-canning, or normal operating noise.
  • Paint micro-fractures, scuffs or marks not clearly visible in daylight from a normal viewing position.
  • Coatings applied by others at the customer's request, or rubbed or scuffed coated surfaces.
  • Weakening of the structure the door is fixed to, or making good timber, plasterboard, masonry, render, penetrations or paint.
  • Problems caused by continuing to use a door known to be faulty, or by skipping preventative maintenance.

When the warranty is void

  • The door and opener are not serviced by Garage Door Group to the schedule above.
  • Post-paint or rust treatments are applied other than to already painted or stained surfaces.
  • The product is used for something it is not designed for.
  • The product is modified by anyone other than Garage Door Group or the manufacturer.
  • The products or services have not been paid for in full.

Your rights under New Zealand law

Nothing in this warranty limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986, where those Acts apply. If you are buying for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act may not apply.

To the extent the law allows, this is the only warranty we give, and other warranties or promises, express or implied, are excluded. We review these terms from time to time to keep them in line with our suppliers, including Windsor Doors. The version that applies is the one we issue with your job, and we will send it on request. Last updated September 2026.

Common questions

On a new door and opener installed by us, yes. The warranty requires Garage Door Group to service the system within 9 months of installation, then every 12 months at a coastal address or every 18 months inland, for 5 years. If a scheduled service is not done by us, the cover on that door and opener can be void. Ring or text us once you are inside the window and we will book it in.
