Electric garage doors, automatic and remote controlled
An electric garage door is any door with a motor on it, and that includes the one already on your wall. Automating an existing door usually costs less than people expect.
Automating a door you already have
You do not need a new door to get an automatic one.
Most sectional and roller doors in good condition can be automated. The motor mounts to the ceiling or the barrel, the door gets rebalanced so the motor is moving it rather than lifting it, and the safety sensors go in across the opening.
The check worth doing first is the door itself. Automating a door with tired springs, worn rollers or a bent track pushes all of that strain onto a new motor, which is how people end up replacing the motor twice. We look at the whole door before quoting the automation.
If the door turns out to be past it, we will say so, and fitting the motor with a new door costs less than doing the two jobs separately.
What an automatic garage door gives you
In a North Auckland winter this is most of the appeal. No getting out in the rain at either end of the trip.
A beam across the opening stops and reverses the door if anything breaks it. If you have children or pets, this is the part that matters.
Open and close the door from your phone, check whether you left it open, and let someone in without handing over a remote.
An automated door locks itself against the motor when closed, which is considerably harder to force than a manual latch.
A modern belt or DC motor is far quieter than an old chain drive, which matters when there is a bedroom over the garage.
Modern openers hold position if the power goes out, and every one we fit has a manual release so you are never locked out.

Usually yes. Most sectional and roller doors in sound condition can be automated without replacing the door itself. What decides it is the state of the springs, rollers and tracks, because a motor fitted to a tired door does the work the springs should be doing and wears out early. We check the whole door before quoting the automation, and if it needs work first we will tell you what and why.
It depends on the door size, the door type and which opener suits it, so we quote after looking at the door rather than over the phone. The quote is free and there is no obligation attached to it. If the door needs work before it can be automated safely, we will tell you that as part of the same visit rather than fitting a motor and letting you discover it later.
Every opener we fit has a manual release, usually a cord hanging from the motor rail. Pull it and the door disconnects from the motor so you can lift it by hand. It is worth practising once while the power is still on, because the moment you actually need it is not the moment to be working out how it operates in the dark with a boot full of shopping.
Modern openers have a safety beam across the opening that stops and reverses the door if anything breaks it, and they also reverse when the door meets resistance on the way down. Both are standard on every opener we install, and they are not optional extras. Test the beam every few months by breaking it while the door closes, and call us if the door does not reverse straight away.
Yes, on the openers we fit. You get an app that opens and closes the door, tells you whether it is currently open, and lets you grant access to someone without handing over a physical remote. It works from anywhere with a connection, which is useful for letting a tradesperson in while you are at work, or checking from the motorway that you did not leave the door up.
A modern belt or DC motor is quieter than an old chain drive and quieter than most people manually lifting and dropping a door. What makes an automated door noisy is usually the door rather than the motor: worn rollers, loose hardware or panels that drum. If noise matters because a bedroom sits over or beside the garage, say so when we quote and we will specify for it.
