Why aluminium on a coastal property
Living near the water is hard on the outside of a house, and the garage door is usually the largest exposed surface on it.
Aluminium has far better corrosion resistance against salt-laden air than steel, which is the single reason most of our coastal customers end up here.
No painting and no refinishing. Occasional washing with mild soap and water, and lubrication of the moving parts twice a year, is the whole job.
Aluminium is lighter than steel, so there is less strain on the motor and the springs, and the hardware lasts longer. It also makes aluminium a sensible choice on very wide openings.

Common questions
Within sight of the water, generally yes. Salt-laden air shortens the life of a steel door, and the corrosion almost always shows first at the bottom panel where spray and standing water collect. By the time you can see it from the driveway it is usually through the coating. Further inland the argument is much weaker and a COLORSTEEL sectional door is better value for the money. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your house sits on.
Over 100 Dulux powdercoat colours on the Smooth Panel 2mm range, which is a far wider palette than the COLORSTEEL range offers. If you are matching window joinery, a specific architectural colour or a resource consent condition, aluminium is usually the easier door to match exactly. Bring us the colour code or a sample and we will confirm it is available before you commit to anything or pay a deposit.
No. The powdercoat finish is the finish, and it does not need repainting or refinishing over the life of the door. Wash it occasionally with mild soap and fresh water, which matters more on a coastal property where salt builds up, and lubricate the moving parts twice a year. That is the entire maintenance schedule, which is the main reason people choose aluminium over a timber door.

Garage doors are often specified late in a build, and the earlier we see the detail the more options you have, particularly where the door has to sit flush with cladding or carry an unusual proportion.
Often, yes, and it is an argument that has nothing to do with the coast. Aluminium is lighter than steel, so a wide aluminium door puts less strain on the springs, the hardware and the motor than the equivalent steel door. On very wide double and triple openings that can mean a longer life from the whole system, not just the door panel itself.
Longer than a steel door in a coastal setting, which is the whole point of specifying it. There is no single number, because it depends on exposure, whether the door is washed occasionally, and how heavily it is used. What we can say is that the failures we get called to on aluminium doors are almost always hardware and motors rather than the door panel itself, which is the reverse of what we see on coastal steel.
