Cedar & timber
Cedar garage doors with real timber
A cedar garage door has a rich grain and a warm colour that no printed woodgrain quite matches. We build wooden garage doors and timber garage doors that resist rot, decay and insects, and insulate naturally.

Design the door
Horizontal or vertical panel arrangements. Vertical tends to suit contemporary cladding, horizontal suits traditional and carriage house styles.
Dressed for a smooth, even face, or band sawn for a coarser, more textural surface that reads better at a distance.
Carriage house for traditional character, or a contemporary flush design where the door should disappear into the cladding. Decorative hardware profiles are available to match the architecture.
Window inserts for natural light, and insulation, which cedar takes as readily as a steel door.
Twenty shades of stain
Cedar is stained rather than coated, so it sits outside the COLORSTEEL® range entirely. The trade-off is a much wider and warmer range of tones.
- 20 shades of stain
- Clear sealants where you want the natural grain to do the talking
- UV-resistant finishes, which matter on a north-facing door
- Marine-grade treatments for coastal properties

What cedar asks of you
A timber door is the only door on this site that needs looking after. Stain and sealant weather, and a west or north facing door in full sun will need recoating sooner than a sheltered one. How often depends on the finish, the exposure and how good it needs to look.
In exchange you get a door with real depth to it. Cedar is naturally insulating, it resists rot and insects without treatment, and it ages in a way that painted steel does not.
If you want the timber look without the upkeep, the Flat Woodgrain profile in our sectional range is the honest alternative. It is a steel door with a woodgrain finish. It will not fool you up close, and it will never need recoating.
Add a motor while we are there
Quiet, reliable motors with safety sensors, operated by a remote or from your phone. Fitting one with the new door costs less than a second visit later.

Common questions
It needs recoating periodically, and how often depends entirely on exposure. A door in full north or west sun weathers considerably faster than a sheltered one, and a coastal door faster again. This is the real trade-off with timber and we would rather say so up front than have you discover it in three years. If low maintenance is your priority, aluminium or a woodgrain steel door will serve you better.
Yes. The Flat Woodgrain profile in our sectional COLORSTEEL range is a steel door with a woodgrain finish, and it never needs recoating. Close up it reads as steel rather than timber, so the decision comes down to how near people actually get to the door. On a street frontage set back behind a drive, most people cannot tell. On a door you walk past daily, real cedar is worth it.
Cedar is stained rather than coated, so it does not use the COLORSTEEL range at all. There are around 20 shades of stain, from a pale natural through to deep warm browns. A stain looks different on cedar than it does on a card, and different again in morning and evening light, so those are chosen from physical samples on site rather than off a screen.
Yes, and cedar already has some natural insulating value before you add anything, because timber conducts heat far more slowly than steel. If the garage is attached to the house, sits under a bedroom, or you use it as a workshop or office, adding insulation is worth doing. It also makes the door quieter to run, which is often what people notice first after an insulated door goes in.
It can be, with marine-grade treatment, and cedar handles coastal conditions better than steel does because it does not corrode. It will still want recoating, and more often than an inland door. If maintenance is the deciding factor for a coastal property, aluminium is the lower-effort choice. If you want the look and accept the upkeep, cedar works well on the coast and we fit them regularly.
Panels can run horizontally or vertically, the timber can be dressed for a smooth face or band sawn for a coarser texture, and the door can be built as a carriage house style or a contemporary flush design. Decorative hardware profiles are available to suit the architecture, and window inserts can be added for natural light. Most of these decisions are easier made on site with samples in hand.
